INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY FOR MUSLIM WOMEN 14 - 18 December 2009
|
An amazing week of learning photography, cultural differences and similarities, learning and understanding each other's needs and personalities and a heap of fun and friendship.
This project was a collaboration between Integrated Images, the Muslim Women's Association and the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre designed to introduce visual imagery as a means of artistic expression, communication, self awareness, to raise self esteem, expose participants to cultural differences and identify any natural photographic talent in the group.
When the group was asked on the first day who did not want to be photographed, seven out of ten responded. Day two we had three who didn't want to be photographed and by day five, everyone had had their photograph taken at least three times by either the instructor or one of the participants.
In fact, quite a number of the young ladies had to be asked on many occassions to stop photographing each other and we still ended up with over 600 photos of participants! Shy, timid, reserved? I don't think so and it was an absoluter delight watching them setting up props and scenarios and then posing the "model" for the shoot.
It is also very pleasing to note that the majority want to come back for more courses during 2010 including a basic modelling and deportment course being developed for young African women in the Brisbane area. There will now be two courses based on the numbers of expressions of interest we have.
These photos are but a very small example of the work they produced using small hand held digital cameras.
Looking forward to the next course. |
